—High ranking officials at the University of Texas convened Saturday and made the final decision to fire head basketball coach Rick Barnes, reports The American-Statesman.
A high level source tells the newspaper the decision was made Saturday but an official announcement will not come until Sunday or Monday due to the men’s swimming and diving team competing at the NCAA finals.
The statesman also reports Texas hopes to hire a new coach within about a week. Which of course probably indicates the school either has someone lined up or has someone at the top of their list.
No doubt when the word becomes official that the winningest men’s basketball head coach in the school’s historyHas been let go it will be the No. 1 subject outside of football season for UT fans.
Barnes has experienced a dreadful combination of poor NCAA tournament results combined with recruitIng which has not quite lived up to the standard Barnes himself set. According to sports-reference.com Barnes has accumulated a 402-180 record at Texas. However over the last 4 seasons Texas has gone 80-57, including an early exist in 2014 and this season from the NCAA tournament.
Some names being thrown into the hat to replace Barnes include current Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg, Witchita State’s Gregg Marshall, VCU’s Shaka Smart, Utah’s Larry Krystkowiak and Dayton’s Archie Miller.
