On Brett Favre and Bart Starr

Update: Watch Starr and Favre at Lambeau Thursday night.

Bart Starr is 81 years old and is doing everything he can to be able to walk onto Lambeau field tonight and witness the retirement of Brett Favre’s No. 4 Jersey.

According to an ESPN the magazine profile of Starr, with the help of a nurse and assistant and his wife, he’s trying to get himself healthy enough to be there. It will likely be his last trip to Lambeau.

“Their ultimate goal is to return him to Lambeau Field on Thanksgiving night, when Brett Favre’s retired No. 4 will be unveiled. Favre delayed his ceremony a year to give Starr a puncher’s chance to make it, and Bart’s family and support network of friends, neighbors and employees are forever telling him he must meet that objective.” (via ESPN)

Starr was the man before there was a Favre in Green Bay. His name “Bart Starr” alone means a great deal to football fans, sports historians and gurus alike. But in reality fans from a younger generation have no idea what Starr did.

Digesting his stats alone doesn’t strike you as anything beyond what we might expect.:

Let’s go to  pro-football-reference.com and take a look:

  • 4 Pro Bowls
  • 1 First Team All Pro
  • Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977
  • 16 Seasons all with the Packers from 1956 to 1971

The amazing thing that stands out to me is the fact that Starr gave his youth to one franchise and one franchise, he played every season across three decades for the Green and the Yellow.

Of course Favre was never afforded that chance, and found himself in the Viking and Jets uniforms to close it all out.

Back to Starr.

If all goes well, tonight Starr will be in attendance at Lambeau giving reverence to a player who many do not revere for one reason or another, and that says a lot about Starr.
